Nonfiction

Father Abraham : Lincoln's relentless struggle to end slavery by Richard Striner.

Forced into glory : Abraham Lincoln's white dream  by Lerone Bennett, Jr.

Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman.

This Newbery Award winner was written for older kids and young teens, but would also serve as a great introduction to Lincoln for an adult.

Fiction

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. This is a very well-written book about a Confederate soldier trying to get back home to his sweetheart, Aida, and her trials at home. Excellent! It won the Pulitizer.

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is my favorite novel of the Civil War. I think I learned more about the war by reading that book, than I ever learned in any school History class!
